Equips i sistemes de protecció per atmosferes potencialment explosives

A potentially explosive atmosphere is composed by air mixtures of gases, vapours, mists or dusts, which can ignite under certain operating conditions.

The Equipment and Protective systems intended for use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres (ATEX) Directive 94/9/EC provides the technical requirements to be applied and the relevant conformity assessment procedures before placing this equipment on the European market. These requirements are given technical expression by "Harmonised Standards", developed by the European Standardisation Organisations: CEN (for non-electrical equipment) and CENELEC (for electrical equipment).

The 99/92/EC directive refers to the workplace. Indicates the minimum installation requirements for improving the safety and protection of health of workers at risk from explosive atmospheres.

Hazardous places are classified in terms of zones on the basis of the frequency and duration of the occurrence of an explosive atmosphere.

The extent of the measures to be taken in accordance with Annex II, Part A, is determined by this classification.
 

Certificació equips ATEX

Explosive atmosphere equipment must be certified according to state regulation (in Spain the Royal Decree 400/1996) which transposes the EU Directive 94/9/EC which establishes the criteria to be met by teams according to their field of application to be intrinsically safe.

Consequently, both the devices used in these areas, as their protection systems, components and associated equipment to ensure proper operation, should be properly marked.

Effective ignition source

Effective ignition source is a term defined in the European ATEX directive as an event which, in combination with sufficient oxygen and fuel in gas, mist, vapor or dust form, can cause an explosion. Methane, hydrogen or coal dust are examples of possible fuels.

SIL Services

OWN INERTING SIL2 SYSTEM

- Fagom has developed an inerting system for tanks and reactors with SIL2 certified. Its goal is to reduce the ATEX classification within a classified equipment as zone 0/20 to become ATEX zone 1/21.

- Different inerting techniques exist according to requirements, geometry and services under which the system is designed. Fagom design the optimal system for each application, making it SIL2 reliable to get a secure system management.

Risk
  • Definition

Risk are part of our daily lives and it is defined as the probability that a dangerous event will occur multiplied by the resulting consequences.

  • Limiting Risks

It is impossible to provide absolute protection from risks, however it is possible to limit them efficiently. Thereby, the objective is to avoid possible damage insofar as possible and to minimize the unavoidable residual risk to an acceptable extent.
To prevent negative impact on personnel, technical equipment and the environment, the first step is tod etermine the possible risks. Next, suitable mechanical or electronical measures need to be implemented.

  • Protection Levels

Measures to reduce the probability of a hazardous incident can be divided into different hierarchical levels under the following principle:

"if one protective level fails, the next highest level is automatically activated"

The reduction of the existing risk is the result of all measures on the various protection levels.

 

Safety integrity level

The various parts of a processing system are associated with different risks.
The criteria for determining this risk set down in IEC/EN 61511, which dictates the measures to be taken to reduce the risk.

As a risk increases, the need for the availability of the Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) also increases. If this risk is limited with the help of installed automation technoloy, then the components must meet the criteria contained in IEC/EN 61508.

  • Classification

SIL is a measure of the probability that the safety system can meet the requiered safety functions for a particular period. The higher the safety integrity level the greater the risk reduction and is divided into four safety stages: SIL1 for a low-level initial risk to SIL4 for a very high-level initial risk.
